Monitors

CCTV monitorUntil IP cameras become feasible for webcasting, we are stuck with analog cameras. The ideal monitor for an analog camera is a CCTV monitor. While it is true that a television can serve as a CCTV monitor by using its 'video in' RCA connectors, the added complexity of having a remote and selecting the correct input has its own cost. This cost is realized in the need for more capable operators in an environment which defined by operator availability and capacity.

Why a CCTV monitor in addition to the computer's monitor?

A security monitor is necessary for previewing a pan/tilt camera's output while another camera is 'online'. Without this preview, the viewers would be forced to see the movement of the pan/tilt camera and become 'sea sick'.

What size of CCTV monitor?

The size of a CCTV monitor is be unique to the situation. First, the monitor's resolution should be as great or greater than the camera's resolution if you want to use it for testing video quality. Second, the monitor will need to be larger if it must be located far from the operator.

What type of CCTV monitor?

CRT monitors are still very popular in the security market but they are heavy and hard to position. Look for something lightweight with a swivel stand.

How do I plug my RCA cable into the monitor's BNC connector?

Simple adapters are available at Radio Shack and possibly even Walmart. Differing connectors is a legacy problem both for video and audio.
